A Music Producer's Thoughts to Create By

A Music Producer’s Thoughts to Create By

$29.98

You never know where or when an idea, a story, or a melody will come to you. The creative flow is within all of us. But how do you harness that energy and learn to produce top-quality recordings? It all boils down to three required elements: a great song, a great performance of that song, and a great sound. “A Music Producer’s Thoughts to Create By” will help you learn to recognize and create these three elements. Producer, engineer, and musician Keith Olsen has spent decades in the music industry, and in this exciting new book, he shares his expertise on musical themes, performance, arrangement, and musical trends. Then he takes you into the recording studio, with discussions of microphone placement, recording of drums, acoustic and electric guitars, monitor speakers, and the pros and cons of building a home studio. After you’ve mastered those concepts, you will learn about the more technical nuts and bolts of producing, the vibe in the studio, and of course the engineering aspects, including the use of effects, the spectrum of sound, and mixing. Finally, you need to know your path through advertising and legal matters for your productions, and Olsen does not disappoint, demystifying promotion, royalties and copyrights, pirating, and intellectual property rights. In short, this comprehensive guide is your key to the world of producing quality products!

A-Ha Members: Morten Harket, Paul Waaktaar-Savoy, Magne Furuholmen

$7.98

Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Not illustrated. Excerpt: Morten Harket (born 14 September 1959 in Kongsberg) is the lead singer of the Norwegian synthpop band a-ha, who have released nine studio albums and topped the charts in several countries after their breakthrough hit “Take on Me” in 1985. Harket has also released four solo albums. The son of Henny and Reidar Harket, and brother to Gunvald, Håkon, Ingunn and Kjetil, Morten grew up in Asker. Early musical influences included Uriah Heep, Queen, Johnny Cash, Toto, Elton John, David Bowie, and Peter Gabriel. Before joining a-ha in 1982, Harket appeared on the Oslo club scene as the singer for blues outfit Souldier Blue. The trio, composed of lead vocalist Harket, guitarist Paul Waaktaar-Savoy (Pål Waaktaar until his marriage in 1994), and keyboardist Magne Furuholmen, formed in 1982, and left Norway for London in order to make a career in the music business. They chose the studio of musician, producer, and soon-to-be-manager, John Ratcliff, because it had a Space Invaders machine. John Ratcliff introduced the boys to his manager, Terry Slater, and, after a few meetings, a-ha had two managers. Terry Slater and John Ratcliff together formed T.J. Management. To deal with all the technical and musical aspects, they had Ratcliff, and Slater’s position was that of international business manager and liaison to Warner Brothers’ head office in Los Angeles. The origin of the name a-ha comes from a title Paul contemplated giving to a song. He could not choose between the names “a-ha” and “A-hem”. Morten was looking through Paul’s notebook, and came across the name “a-ha”. He liked it, and said, “That’s a great name. That’s what we should call ourselves.” In 1984, a-ha released their first single, “Take On Me”, which didn’t become a hit until… More:

Call it death metal, power metal, hardcore, poignant rock, call it what you will, Between The Buried And Me’s follow-up to The Silent Circus, entitled Alaska, utters sheer brilliance from start to finish. 2003 saw the release of their Victory debut, The Silent Circus, and now their legions of staunchly loyal fans are on the edge of their seats waiting for their follow-up album. Does it measure up to The Silent Circus? Yes, it does. Between The Buried And Me have invited their listeners to journey with them into uncharted territory and unbroken ground with the release of their provocative new album, Alaska.Alaska was recorded throughout June of 2005: first at Basement Studios in Rural Hall, NC with Jamie King, who was known for recording Between The Buried And Me’s self-titled release. We were stoked to go back and record again with Jamie. We’ve known him for years and have recorded with him before, it definitely feels like home in his studio, said lead guitarist Paul Waggoner. After the recording sessions were complete, the band headed to Boston and finished up the album with producer Matthew Ellard, who recorded The Silent Circus and is also known for his work with Converge and Bury Your Dead. Between The Buried And Me are back to eschew any ideas of conventional thought and push themselves into never before seen artistic directions. Fans of intelligent, heavy music aren’t prepared for the musical ambush coming their way; Alaska is a magnum opus showcasing the band’s hypnotic and elaborate guitar work, relentless rhythmic underlining, thought-provoking lyrics, and creative ingenuity. Not since releases like Refused’s The Shape Of Punk To Come and The Mars Volta’s De-Loused In The Comatorium has the music world seen such an envelope-pushing group of musicians. Between The Buried And Me have upped the ante for all musical releases to come. Damn, they’ve done it again.
