An Introduction to Thermal Physics $4.5 Used – This textbook is intended for introductory courses in physics, engineering and chemistry at universities, polytechnics and technical colleges. It provides either an elementary treatment of thermal physics, complete in itself, for those who need to carry the subject no further, or a sound foundation for further study in more specialised courses. The author gives a clear and concise account of those basic concepts that provide the foundations for an understanding of the thermal properties o |

College Writing and Beyond $24.95 Composition research consistently demonstrates that the social context of writing determines the majority of conventions any writer must observe. Still, most universities organize the required first-year composition course as if there were an intuitive set of general writing skills usable across academic and work-world settings. In College Writing and Beyond: A New Framework for University Writing Instruction, Anne Beaufort reports on a longitudinal study comparing one student’s experience in FYC, in history, in engineering, and in his post-college writing. Her data illuminate the struggle of college students to transfer what they learn about general writing from one context to another. Her findings suggest ultimately not that we must abolish FYC, but that we must go beyond even genre theory in reconceiving it. Accordingly, Beaufort would argue that the FYC course should abandon its hope to teach a sort of general academic discourse, and instead should systematically teach strategies of responding to contextual elements that impinge on the writing situation. Her data urge attention to issues of learning transfer, and to developmentally sound linkages in writing instruction within and across disciplines. Beaufort advocates special attention to discourse community theory, for its power to help students perceive and understand the context of writing. |

Evaluation and Decision Models with Multiple Criteria: Stepping stones for the analyst $115.48 Formal decision and evaluation models are sets of explicit and well-defined rules to collect, assess, and process information in order to be able to make recommendations in decision and/or evaluation processes. They are so widespread that almost no one can pretend not to have used or suffered the consequences of one of them.In our earlier companion volume, Evaluation and Decision Models, we heavily criticised formal models but we also argued that they could be useful. On the other hand, Evaluation and Decision Models with Multiple Criteria is a guide, a way of reasoning aimed at helping the analyst to choose a model and use it consistently. We propose, often using an axiomatic point of view, a sound analysis of techniques aimed at supporting the decision aiding process. Our presentation is carried out within a unique framework that can be extended to most decision and evaluation models, as a “decision aiding methodology”.Evaluation and Decision Models with Multiple Criteria is intended for the aware or enlightened practitioner, for anyone who uses decision or evaluation models—-for research or for applications—-and is willing to question his practice, to have a deeper understanding of what he does. The authors of this book are European academics working in four different universities and research institutions. They teach in engineering, mathematics, computer science and psychology schools. Their background is quite varied: mathematics, economics, engineering, law and geology, but they are all active in decision support and more particularly in multiple criteria decision support. Preference modelling, fuzzy logic, aggregation techniques, social choice theory, artificial intelligence, problem structuring, measurement theory and Operational Research are among their special interests. The authors are active in theoretical research on the foundations of decision aiding, mainly from an axiomatic point of view. Green Electronics/Green Bottom Line: Environmentally Responsible Engineering $93.88 Each chapter opens with a topical cartoon and lively story, interview or editorial. The discussion will then move to specific engineering issues and their economic and social context. The last section explores larger possibilities and new directions still to be explored by engineers concerned with education, health, and environmental quality. Contributors include engineers from Motorola, Analog Devices, Dupont, Compaq, Nortel, AMD, and Apple Computer, and academics from universities in the US, Canada, the UK, and Europe, as well as the Rocky Mountain Institute. An everyday guide to environmentally sound electronics designContributors include top engineers from the biggest electronics manufacturers and most prestigious universitiesReal-world cases illustrate topics giving concepts the reader can apply immediately |

Outer Domain $16.94 As a science fiction reader, I noticed a crop of books that are just a tad shy on science. I appreciate knowing that the writer has some knowledge of science, otherwise I’ll pick up a Harlequin romance novel. As a researcher (I am listed in the Marquis Who’s Who in Science and Engineering), and My Book “Sound Synthesis”, TAB BOOKS Inc. is a text in several US universities and two in Europe. I realize that novels are essentially character and story driven, but science adds a special element to the mix. Humor, also conspicuously missing from most science fiction, makes this story more engaging and reader friendly. The year is 2078 and Captain Felix Jenner is the commanding officer of the starship USS Mobius, a class D scientific research ship, operating as a deep space probe. A new source of light has appeared at the outer rim of our system and the Mobius has been selected for a mission to investigate the phenomenon. Nineteen of the finest science officers from the Academy were chosen for the mission including the best science officer in the fleet, Niles A. Barstow For the first few months everything went well but strange things began to happen on board. Multiple false hull breach alarms were triggered with no evidence of internal pressure loss. Add to this a variety of instrument malfunctions and you have the ingredients for panic. The crew however is working at efficiency greater than anyone has the right to expect. Even captain Jenner manages to masterfully maneuver the ship through an unexpected asteroid field. As they approach the light source they see a giant cloud, A cloud which officer Barstow points out, could not maintain its billowy state in the vacuum ofspace. They soon find out that the cloud is an amorphous powder. As they explore the cloud a derelict alien ship appears. Captain Jenner and Science Officer Barstow decided to take a shuttle to the alien vessel and find the bodies of large dead creatures. They return to the Mobius with |

Research On Pbl Practice In Engineering Education $49 The success of Problem Based Learning and Project Organised learning (PBL) as an educational method in the field of Higher Engineering Education is clear and beyond any doubt. An increasing number of Universities of Technology all over the world applies PBL in their curriculum. There are many sound arguments for changing to PBL, such as enhancing students’ motivation, integration of practice oriented competences, improved retention of students, augmenting the quality of education, collaboration with industry. More and more educational research is supplying evidence to sustain these arguments. Engineers create innovations to improve the quality of our life. It just makes sense that the institutes of Higher Engineering Education want to know what educational innovations contribute to the quality of engineering education. To promote research on PBL the UNESCO chair in Problem Based Learning in Engineering Education (UCPBL) organised the first Research Symposium on Problem Based Learning in Engineering and Science Education, June 30th-July 1st, 2008 at Aalborg University. This book contains a selection of papers from this research symposium, which have been reviewed and further developed. |
